P46, the first leaf of the Book of Ephesians.

P46. In many ways this is a remarkable manuscript. It is the earliest text of most of the letters of Paul and is usually dated in the early third century. Of an original 104 leaves, it now has 86 leaves. Paul’s letters appear in the following order: Romans, Hebrews, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Ephesians, Galatians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians. Portions are missing from Romans and 1 Thessalonians, and 2 Thessalonians is missing entirely.

The order of the Pauline letters is unusual and some are not present. Apparently this was a collection of Paul’s letters addressed to the churches, and thus 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon are not included. That Hebrews is merged with the Pauline list reflects the belief then current (in Egypt?) that Paul was the author of Hebrews. Of greater importance is the kind of text found in P46. Here, again, the codex is remarkable. Its text is often akin to the Vatican Manuscript and in general may be described as an early form of the Alexandrian text.

P47. This third-century codex contains about a third of the text of Revelation, with slight loss at the tops of each page. Generally speaking, its text type is Alexandrian and is especially close to that of the Sinaitic Manuscript.
